About our Instructors
Double Tap Academy is blessed with a team of high quality and experienced instructors who are passionate about helping to educate newer shooters and coach experienced shooters. As students consider courses to take, it is important that they know who is teaching them and their qualifications. While these qualifications not only help educate in the classroom and on the range, they can be critically important in a courtroom.
Mr. Keller started Double Tap Academy in 2012 as a direct result of attending some training courses where he felt law abiding citizens were not receiving an adequate understanding of the legal aspects of self-defense. He is passionate about educating students in the effective use of their firearms and the legal aspects. He has over 300 hours of firearms training and is an NRA Certified Instructor in the areas of: Basic Pistol, Personal Protection Inside the Home, Personal Protection Outside the Home, Rifle, and Chief Range Safety Officer. Additionally, he is certified Massad Ayoob Range Instructor. He is a graduate of Massad Ayoob’s MAG40, Rob PIncus’ Combat Focus Shooting and Advanced Handgun, Tom Given’s Pistol Instructor Development, Doc Gunn’s Tactical Treatment of Gunshot Wounds, GSL’s Advanced Pistol, and Fortress Defense’s Tactical Carbine programs. He is an certified Illinois Concealed Carry Instructor.
He is a member of the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network, National Rifle Association (life), the Illinois State Rifle Association, and the National Organization of Church Security and Safety Management. Rob has been married to his wife Diane for 24 years and attends Vale Community Church in Bloomington.
Brian Thielen is a principal with Thielen, Foley & Mirdo, LLC, a personal injury law firm in Bloomington, Illinois. He is a trial lawyer with more than 30 years of experience in the courtroom, who concentrates his practice in personal injury and commercial litigation, and is a member of the McLean County and Illinois State Bar Associations.
Mr. Thielen is a graduate of several firearms training courses at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute in Nevada. He is a is an NRA certified instructor in Pistol and Rifle, and is an Illinois certified Concealed Carry Instructor. He is passionate about the 2nd Amendment and about teaching law abiding citizens the legal aspects of self-defense. His goal is to help people understand and practice the safe use of their firearm, and to invest them in the critically important need to protect the 2nd Amendment.
Additionally, he is a student of the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do, having achieved the rank of Black Belt.
Mr. Thielen attends Eastview Christian Church, where he serves as a Bible teacher in the men's ministry. He has been married to Jeralynne for 29 years, and has two beautiful daughters - both of whom also practice the discipline of Tae Kwon Do and who, along with his wife, also have trained at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute.
Dr. Brad Barnes
Dr. Bradley W. Barnes has been providing outstanding dental care for over 25 years! He earned his dental degree from University of Iowa College of Dentistry and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
Dr. Barnes is a designated public speaker for the Illinois State Dental Society, and speaks for the P.A.N.D.A. program (a program which trains Dental Professionals to recognize and report child and elder abuse). He is also very active in several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association (member of the House of Delegates), Illinois State Dental Society (member of the Board of Trustees, House of Delegates and General Chairman of the 2010 Annual Session and Chairman of the 2011 Capitol Conference), and the McLean County Dental Society (past president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer).
Dr. Barnes gives back to the community by volunteering with the Boys Scouts of America, the Jeremiah Sportsmen, and his local church. He is a past Chairman for the Illinois State Mission of Mercy. He is a certified NRA Instructor and a certified Illinois Concealed Carry Instructor.
In his leisure time, Dr. Barnes enjoys the outdoors, hunting, fishing and hiking.
Lt. Stephens is retired from the Normal Police Department where he served from 1983 to 2012. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois’s Police Training Institute’s Master Firearms Instructor Program and Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. He has been a police firearms instructor since 1990 and an Illinois Hunter Safety Instructor for 10 years. Lt. Stephens has over 2000 hours of firearms training. He is an Illinois Concealed Carry Instructor.
He has been married for 36 years and attends St. John’s Church in Minier.
Dr. Larry Heisner, DMin
Larry is a retired organization professional and businessman. He is also an Ordained Minister with experience as a Church Pastor, Bible College faculty and Certified Police Chaplain.
He grew up in a hunting family in deep Southern Illinois and has been around guns his entire life. His passion is safety in all aspects of firearm ownership, training and use. He has over 100 hours of formal Classroom and Range training plus the equivalent of seven years of US Army infantry and Missouri National Guard training.
He is a NRA Certified Pistol Instructor, NRA Certified Range Safety Officer and an Illinois Approved Conceal Carry Instructor. Larry is a NRA Life Member as well as a member of ISRA, GSL, Illinois Carry and Armed Citizen’s Defense Network.
Kiki grew up in a hunting family in Pennsylvania and has been around firearms her entire life. Her interest expanded to self-defense when she was robbed at gunpoint in 2013 at her office. She knows the importance of being prepared to defend your life. Her passion is to help others understand the importance of being prepared to safely handle a life-threatening situation, before it happens. She enjoys helping others learn about the safe use of firearms, selecting the proper equipment based on individual needs, and stresses continuation of training after initial exposure.
Kiki is an NRA Member, an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor, NRA Certified Refuse to be a Victim Instructor, and an Illinois Approved Concealed Carry Instructor. Kiki is also a member of the USCCA.
Kiki has been married for 25 years, has three children ages 24, 21 and 16. She attends Point of Change Church in Bloomington, IL and is the General Manager for a local business.
Mr. Miller grew up in a law enforcement family, with his father, mother, uncle, and two cousin’s serving various Oklahoma departments. Starting at an early age, he has hunted most species in North America. He was a non-commissioned officer in the US Army, stationed in the Republic of Korea and Ft. Bragg where he supported Airborne Infantry and Special Operations Forces. During his 6 years serving, he conducted training in basic marksmanship. He has taught firearms and Computer Sciences courses; and is a concealed pistol and military bolt action rifle competitor.
Mr. Miller has been married for 16 years and has 2 daughters. As an NRA Certified Basic Pistol instructor and Illinois Concealed Carry Instructor, he enjoys helping people learn about firearm safety, improving their shooting skills, and selecting the right equipment. Additionally he is a life member of the National Rifle Association.
